I hear you, you HATE to diet, in fact you have tried so many diets without success that you couldn’t even dream of picking up a new diet book even if it promised fast and easy results.  If you are at this point but still want to lose weight then don’t despair, there are many things you can do to drop pounds even if you HATE to diet!

There are many behaviors that lead to overeating that can be easily changed with a few behavior modification tricks.  For instance, if you are a fast eater you are probably consuming a lot of calories before your brain even registered that you have eaten.

To learn how to eat slower try this strategy, I call it eating with all five of your senses.  For the next full week try to eat by using all of your senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste.

What you want to do is take your bite of food and before you put it in your mouth you want to look at it; notice it’s color and shape.  Next, notice if it has an aroma by smelling it, then put it in your mouth and notice if it makes a sound when you bite into it.  Okay, two more senses to go, next notice how it feels in your mouth and finally taste it.

By eating with all five of your senses you will naturally slow down your eating and you will notice the flavors of your food much more which will leave you feeling satisfied with less food.

Great, let me share one more behavior modification skill with you, this one has to do with telling the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.  Many people find diets difficult because they are in a constant state of feeling hungry and that is no fun.  But it is possible that some of this hunger is emotional hunger.

We feel hunger in two ways, the first is actually having an empty stomach but the other way is triggered by cues outside of our body.  For instance, you might feel hungry suddenly when a pizza commercial comes on TV or when someone is making homemade cookies.  At these times we “feel” hungry and our appetite is stimulated but we might not be physically hungry.

For this week try rating your actual physical hunger on a scale of 0 to 10 at different times of the day.  “0″ on the scale means your belly is completely empty and you are starving, and “10″ means you are stuffed.

Just take a few seconds at about 5 different times during the day and ask yourself, “how hungry is my stomach feeling?” then rate your hunger using the scale.

What this will do is reconnect you with true hunger and then when you are prompted to eat just because someone else is eating you will be able to know how hungry you are and make a choice to eat or to delay eating.

I do want to say that I am not anti-dieting, but I do understand when people get to that point where they have just had it and hate to diet.  If this is you, just know that there are many ways that you can shift your behaviors, lose weight and keep your sanity.
