Fast And Easy Weight Loss Using Diet Programs And Diet Pills

June 23rd, 2010

If you’re one of the approximately 67% of Americans that are wired into the internet, there’s a good chance that sometime in the last 24 hours you’ve received at least one spam email promoting the latest and greatest diet pill or weight loss program. These diet products promise fast weight loss results, often without any effort or exercise. The never-ending promise of a weight loss pill that actually works keeps us hoping for eventual success.

At the same time, we’re continually inundated with news of the most recent diet and how this time it’s really going to work for us. The South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Low Carb Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the LA Weight Loss Diet, the Weight Watchers Diet, the Diabetic Diet, the Low Cholesterol Diet, the Prescription Pill Diet, the 3 Day Diet, the Low Fat Diet, the High Protein Diet, the Maker Diet, the Liquid Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Fad Diet, the Blood Type Diet, the GI Diet, the Vegetarian Diet, the Vegan Diet, the Detox Diet, the Dash Diet, the Candida Diet, the Gluten Free Diet, the Hollywood Diet, the Negative Calorie Diet, the 1200 Calorie Diet, the Raw Food Diet, the Phentermine Diet, the High Fiber Diet, the Macrobiotic Diet, the Science Diet, the Lemonade Diet, the Scarsdale Diet, the Diverticulitis Diet and the Fat Flush Diet are all examples of diet plans that promise to help us achieve quick weight loss.

Crash diets, weight loss pills and get-thin-quick gimmicks are more prevalent than ever, yet two-thirds of our population is still overweight. Even more startling is the fact that approximately one-third of the people in our country are clinically obese.

With all of these ‘solutions’ available to us, why is it that obesity trends have been alarming enough to prompt the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) to label obesity a national epidemic? Why are we still, as a nation, getting fatter? It’s certainly not because we’re not trying.

On the contrary, as a nation we’re trying harder than ever to lose fat through diet and other weight loss products. As reported by CNN on 1-14-05 “Americans were expected to spend more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry.” Furthermore, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight.

As reported by mygoals.com, 80 percent of Americans made a New Year’s resolution in 2005. A whopping 26 percent of those resolutions were to improve overall health and fitness, making this the top category for self-improvement. This year was no anomaly, either, according to Amy O’Connor, deputy editor of Prevention magazine: “Fifty-nine million people every year resolve to lose weight.”

So, is there a healthy diet product out there that will actually work? More than likely, the answer is yes. Although there is quite a bit of fraudulent weight loss merchandise on the market today, there is also (somewhere out there) a diet program and weight loss plan that will work for us. The challenge is to find that diet product or diet plan.

-> Repeat Business:

The diet and weight loss industry is a huge money making machine. According to Marketdata Enterprises, the annual revenue for the diet industry was over $30 billion dollars in 1990. A 2005 report by Stanford University documents that the consumer diet industry is now approximately $44 billion and growing. With all this money flowing around, haven’t we as a country spent enough to fix the obesity problem once and for all?

How can the diet industry keep making more and more money, year after year? After all, $44 billion dollars is a lot of cash! The answer to that question is simple: repeat business. “98% of today’s dieters gain the weight back in 5 years. 90% of those individuals end up gaining back more than they lost originally, due to the body’s panic and efforts to stabilize metabolic rates over the long term” (Source: Stanford University; stanford.edu).

How do the diet-promoters get all that repeat business? The diet industry is a very unique enterprise in that, when it fails someone, they rarely blame the product. We are hard-pressed to find another business where, if the product doesn’t work, we blame ourselves. All too often, after giving up on yet another diet program, we find ourselves thinking “Well, I guess I’m just not a good enough dieter.” The tendency is for us to believe that we failed the diet rather than the other way around.

Apply this same logic to the automotive industry, and it soon becomes clear just how faulty this line of reasoning really is. What would happen if we take our car in to the mechanic for repairs and when we returned to pick it up he told us that although we still had to pay the bill, he was unable to fix the problem? Would we willing pay the bill anyway and just say “Oh well, I guess it’s just a bad car?” Of course not! That would be ridiculous! But that’s exactly what we do when it comes to diets.

-> One Size Does Not Fit All:

What we need to realize is that there is probably a weight loss product or weight loss plan out there that will work for us, but it may not be the same one our friends or co-workers used. To find the best weight loss program for us, we absolutely must realize that one size does not fit all. What worked for our sibling or spouse may not work for us, and what works for us may not work for them.

It’s probably safe to say that any diet supplement has helped somebody, but it’s also true that no weight loss drug or plan has helped everybody. Each person has a unique metabolism and very individual nutritional needs, so no single plan will work for everyone.

-> How To Find The Right Weight Loss Diet:

Some fat burner products on the market today do indeed work. Others are a complete rip-off. How do you tell the difference? Where do you go for accurate and reliable weight loss information?

First and foremost, talk with your doctor. Your own personal physician is likely to be honest with you and provide you with the facts. In addition, he or she can help you decide which weight loss supplement may be right for your personal situation.

There are also quite a few reputable organizations that provide accurate information on fat loss. Some of the better resources include:
* American Cancer Society – www.cancer.org
* Centers For Disease Control – www.cdc.gov
* Diet Scam Watch – www.dietscam.org
* Calories Per Hour – www.caloriesperhour.com
* Harvard Medical School – www.health.harvard.edu
* Mayo Clinic – www.mayoclinic.org
* Shape Up America – www.shapeup.org
* Calorie Control Council – www.caloriecontrol.org
* President’s Council On Physical Fitness – www.fitness.gov

When seeking a healthy weight loss plan, it’s important that no food be strictly forbidden. There should not be any (or many) foods that we avoid completely 100% of the time. Why? Because that sets us up for failure! For example, if fudge is one of our favorites and we force ourselves to NOT eat fudge at the holiday party, then for many of us what we’ve done is set ourselves up for a binge fudge-festival.

Avoiding our favorite foods entirely is a too much self-deprivation for most people, and this sets us up for binge-eating. That’s a recipe for disaster!

A much better approach is to enjoy foods in moderation. Watch those serving sizes! Enjoy and savor one piece of fudge! It’s better to enjoy one piece of fudge and then stop than attempt to deprive ourselves entirely, only to end up eating the whole pan.

A good diet and nutrition program will also help us keep in mind the cost of the foods we eat. We’re not talking about dollars and cents here, but the FITNESS cost of the food. When picking up that fudge, keep in mind what it will cost to enjoy it. When picking up a plate at the buffet table, let’s take a moment to pause and think to ourselves: “The cost of this fudge will be an extra _____ minutes of exercise…..is that worth it to me?” Maybe. Maybe not. That’s for each of us to decide on our own.

The point is that we should be conscious of our food decisions. No foods are forbidden entirely, but we do need to watch our portion sizes and carefully consider the cost of each food. Any good weight management program will incorporate these concepts and also will be approved by your doctor.

-> How To Find The Right Weight Loss Supplement:

Perhaps even more so than with weight loss diets, when searching for weight loss supplements it is critical to rely on the advice of your physician. The careful and supervised use of weight loss diet pills, combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, can lead to quick weight loss and even easy weight loss (or at least easier than you expected).

Beware, however, the supplement scams on the market. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. The gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous…..even deadly.

As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous ‘maybe’. “The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users’ blood pressure, the group contended.” (Source: cnn.com)

This week the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia.

Another example of a dangerous weight loss drug is ephedra. Ephedra was banned in the United States last year, in part due to numerous deaths attributed to this popular weight loss supplement. On April 14 2005, a federal Judge in Utah reversed the short-lived ban on ephedra. Within minutes, spammers were filling our email boxes with messages to BUY BUY BUY before ephedra was banned again.

Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use…..

Yet another example of a dangerous diet drug is steroids. For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: “Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they’d tried in the previous year.” (Source: cnn.com)

There do exist, however, some diet supplements that work and are also quite safe. Again, it is never a good idea to begin any supplementation program without first seeking the advice and approval of your doctor.

Three popular and dependable fat loss products designed to help you lose weight fast are ChromeMate, Lipotropic Plus and Super L-Carnitine.

Chromium helps insulin metabolize fat, turn protein into muscle and convert sugar into energy. ChromeMate, a unique form of niacin-bound chromium, is designed to optimize energy output. It accomplishes this by increasing the amount of glucose available for energy production nearly twenty-fold. It also is the “master” nutrient for controlling blood sugar, which in turn curbs sugar cravings. What’s more, a study at Auburn University showed that ChromeMate reduced LDL cholesterol by an average of 14%. In fact, ChromeMate has been awarded a patent for lowering cholesterol.

The Lipotropic Plus Formula is scientifically-engineered to assist in the breakdown, distribution and burning (oxidation) of fatty acids. The active ingredients actually accelerate the fat-burning process by breaking down fat cells into smaller particles (emulsification) to be used for fuel during exercise.

Super L-Carnitine is essential for fat burning. I.B. Fritz and K.T.N. Yue, physiologists from the University of Michigan, discovered that Carnitine actually accelerates fat-burning. Without it, fat is unable to penetrate the walls of the mitochondria of the muscle cells. Carnitine is the shuttle that carries fat into your body’s furnaces (muscles) to be burned for energy. Super L-Carnitine increases the rate of fat utilization for fuel.

-> Weight Loss Exercise:

In this article we’ve been discussing weight loss diets and weight loss supplements. At this point it is essential that we add the third and most important component of overall health and fitness: exercise.

Exercise is one weight loss method that has never been banned, has never led to an investigation, and has never been been listed on a ‘whistleblower’ fraud report.

Exercise is the only path to health and fitness that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than diets or drugs ever will alone. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being!

Yes, it’s quite possible to lose weight without participating in regular exercise. However, diet and exercise combined will help us burn fat faster than we thought possible! Weight loss achieved by regular exercise and diet will be healthy weight loss because of all the benefits we obtain from regular exercise:

1. Strengthens muscles
2. Strengthens bone
3. Strengthens ligaments
4. Strengthens tendons
5. Strengthens immune system
6. Improves muscle tone
7. Improves endurance
8. Improves strength
9. Improves self esteem
10. Improves confidence
11. Improves balance
12. Improves physical appearance
13. Improves physical performance
14. Improves glucose tolerance
15. Improves circulation
16. Improves memory
17. Lower risk of heart disease
18. Lower risk of diabetes
19. Lower risk of cancer
20. Lower blood pressure
21. Lower cholesterol
22. Lower risk of stroke
23. Lower risk of osteoporosis
24. Lower risk of osteoarthritis
25. Lower requirements for medication
26. Lower risk of injury
27. Lower bodyfat
28. Helps with sleep disorders
29. Reduces post-operative complications
30. Reduces frequency of illness
31. Prevent Alzheimer’s disease
32. Prevents muscle loss
33. Increases metabolism
34. Eases symptoms of menopause
35. Healthier pregnancy
36. Fewer problems with childbirth
37. Reduces ovulation problems
38. Prevents heartburn

Reaching your ideal weight via a healthy and active lifestyle has been found to lower health risks and medical problems in 90 percent of overweight patients. In addition to the exercise benefits listed above, fit people are eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit, and 53 percent less likely to die from other diseases. Fit people are also eight times less likely to die from heart disease.

Without a doubt, regular exercise is the most important piece of the puzzle and the best way to achieve rapid weight loss. Exercise is the safest way to achieve permanent fat loss, and when combined with a sound diet and nutrition program the body is turned into a virtual fat-burning furnace!

-> Conclusion:

Fast weight loss is possible if we, under the supervision and approval of our doctor, combine a sensible diet with a diet pill or weight loss pill that is safe and effective. When we combine these three fat-burning strategies it is almost guaranteed that we will experience quick weight loss results.

Get clean on the inside first for a safe weight loss:

June 12th, 2010

I was driving past the gym the other day and I was actually impressed at how full the building was with people diligently getting their workout for the day in. Perhaps it’s because it is summer time here in Los Angeles and everyone wants to look good for this time of the year.

Well, as motivating as this may be, and as much as I honestly applaud their efforts, I couldn’t help but wonder how many of these obviously dedicated people were concerned with not just the external appearance of health but the inside as well.

 Get clean on the inside first for a safe weight loss: It is documented that people spend loads of money on the new weight-loss pill or supplement guaranteed to ‘make you eat less and increase your metabolism…’ and in spite of whatever side effects the product may contain, the average Joe, still thinks this quick fix will be worth the risk.

What most people fail to realize is most fitness experts and bodybuilders who may use or endorse such products have a tendency to atrophy and wear down prematurely as sooner or later, these bodies, enhanced by unnatural substances have a tendency to pretty much degenerate.

Sure everyone wants to have the six-pack and the toned arms and all, and that is fine and of course worth striving for if one so desires, however, what should be of more importance is how clean the inside of the body is. This determines perhaps more than is realized just how one feels and speaking of a six-pack, if one’s colon and visceral organs are free of excess weight and debris, naturally a decent looking mid-section will be evident. (Just food for thought)

The average person is constantly carrying 10-15 pounds of un-eliminated feces in their bowels. This in itself has a toxic effect on the blood stream. Experts in autopsy have stated that in 60-70% of the colons examined, foreign matter such as worms and decades old feces-stones have been found still present within.

Now, it’s not my intention to gross you out with the fact in the previous paragraph, but it is to hopefully make you realize how much more important it is to ensure that our insides are clean as we go about seeking to lose weight, at least the healthy way.

These substances will serve to naturally combat chronic constipation which is the main indication of a clogged up system. Moreover, these are the items that provide one with the most natural sources of vitamins, minerals and fuel for day to living and borrowing from a cosmic law of nature, since “you are what you eat”, it goes without saying that if you want a safe and healthy weight loss, these items are of course your best bet.

Sure, it is a great feeling to be able to see the awesome cuts in your ‘abs’ and arms when you look in the mirror, but feeling good on the inside as well and knowing that you are thoroughly cleansed internally should be of just as much importance as ‘getting ripped’ or slim.

Remember, the cleaner you are on the inside and the freer you are of toxicity the quicker you can and will attain your goal of being in shape.

Here’s to health and happiness.

cancer of the ovary

January 20th, 2010

The ovaries make eggs. In fertile women, each month an egg (ovum) is released from one of the ovaries. The egg passes down the fallopian tube into the uterus where it may be fertilised by a sperm.

Women desperate for the condition of being pregnant may possibly be setting themselves up for tumor if they take fertility medication. Mary Rossing, PH.D. And colleagues at the University of Washington at the Cancer Research Center discover that women taking fertility medication had 2-1/s times the usual hazard of increasing ovarian cancer, especially long-term make use of of the drug clomiphene, at the Stanford University school of Medicine discover a threefold greater take the risk of of ovarian cancer together with women using fertility drugs.

Ovarian cancer is thought to stem from genetic mistakes that happen as cells divide to fix the ovary once it ruptures to discharge an egg. Before the present time the condition of being pregnant, which comes to an end ovulation for months at a time, has been revealed to greatly lessen the likelihood of a woman developing ovarian cancer, it stands to reason that whatever thing that stimulates ovulation will hold the opposite influence.

This genetic imperfection, by the way, may possibly be corrected through good nutrition. All the illnesses that befall us are the result or influenced by genes. Exactly for the reason that you are born with faulty genes, does not mean you tolerate to live with them. The truth is, the body has enzymatic machinery designed to annihilate and restore faulty nuclear DNA (genes). This offensive line depends on good nourishment for optimum performance. Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D., says, ?think of the gene as the seed, the surroundings as the soil. You can grow a healthy plant in high-quality soil even if you start out with a weak seed.?

A ally revealed me they recently open the gene for being overweight. ?It was revealed at the bottom of a container of Haagen Daz ice cream,? she laughed.

The eating of dairy products has been connected to a higher-than-normal incidence of ovarian cancer. In 1989, Gynecologist Daniel Kramer at Harvard Medical School in Boston linked galactose eating with an increased take the risk of of ovarian cancer. Galactose has been discover to be toxic to human eggs, it may possibly be that it in some way interferes with our enzymatic offensive line.

If you need to avoid ovarian cancer, do not eat fatty products, and concentrate of fresh, whole vegetables. Harvey Risch, M.D., Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Yale University School of Medicine discover that the unpleasant cholesterol-raising properties of Tran fatty acids, saturated fat an eggs increased a woman?s likelihood of delivering ovarian cancer. He discover eating vegetable fiber decreased the risk as it decreased the cholesterol. He has come to the clonclusion that reducing the intake of saturated fat and consuming supplementary vegetables appears to reduce the danger of ovarian cancer. If your cholesterol is high and you are concerned about ovarian cancer, take aged garlic extract.

Why Low Fat Milk is Worst For Cancer

January 10th, 2010

Many people choose skim or semi-skim milk thinking it is better for health. But growing evidence is showing that low fat milk is worst for cancer. Although the research is showing that all types of dairy milk increases the risk of various types of cancer, this risk is significantly greater with skim milk.

There are several studies showing that skim milk significantly increases the risk of cancer. Here are just a few of these studies:

- Skim milk, but not other dairy foods, was associated with increased risk of advanced prostate cancer (Yikyung Park, et al, American Journal of Epidemiology 2007 166(11):1270-1279).

- Increasing consumption of skim milk was associated with a greater risk of ovarian cancer (Lawrence H. Kushi, et al, Prospective Study of Diet and Ovarian Cancer, American Journal of Epidemiology Vol. 149, No. 1: 21-31).

- Drinking skim or low fat milk increases the overall risk of getting any type of ovarian cancer by 44%. It increases the risk for the most common type of ovarian cancer (called serous tumors) by 66%. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer among American women. (Peggy Peck commenting on a Harvard Medical School study of 80,000 nurses showing that women who drink two or more glasses of milk a day have a 44% higher risk of getting ovarian cancer than women who rarely drink milk).

- Low-fat and skim milk were associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer (Larsson SC, et al, Milk and lactose intakes and ovarian cancer risk in the Swedish Mammography Cohort. Am J Clin Nutr. 2004; 30(5): 1353-7).

How does skim milk cause cancer? The answer is that skim milk provides a particular cocktail of ingredients that encourage body cells to mutate and grow. All kinds of dairy milk are high in IGF-1 hormones. When you consume milk, the excess IGF-1 increases the risk of cancer in humans.

Scientists know that IGF-1 needs the presence of estrogen metabolites to cause cell mutation and growth. Skim and semi-skim milk provide these harmful estrogen metabolites to a greater extent than other kinds of milk. The evidence for this is growing. For example, a May 2009 study looked at different types dairy milk [source: D. Farlow, et al, Quantitative measurement of endogenous estrogen metabolites, risk-factors for development of breast cancer, in commercial milk products, Chromatography B, Volume 877, Issue 13, Pages 1327-1334]. The study stated that:

“Overall, skim milk had the smallest quantity of free estrogens. However, the conjugated type that dominated skim milk’s profile, 2-hydroxyestrone, is known to be one of the most reactive and potentially risky of the metabolites. That metabolite’s concentration in fat-free milk was second only to buttermilk’s. Estrogen can amplify the cell-proliferating effects seen with IGF-1.”

There are plenty of studies showing that IGF-1 in dairy milk significantly increases the risk of cancer for men and women. Here is just a small selection of those studies:

- The tiny homogenized fat globules carry IGF-1 from milk through the stomach and gut into the bloodstream where they can circulate through the body to exert powerful growth effects. This IGF-1 allows cancers to grow. (Robert Cohen, Milk – The Deadly Poison, Argus Publishing, January 1, 1998, ISBN: 0965919609).

- IGF-1 produces a 10-fold increase in RNA levels of cancer cells. IGF-1 appears to be a critical component in cellular proliferation. (Experimental Cell Research, March, 1994, 211-1).

- IGF-1 accelerates the growth of breast cancer cells. (Science, Vol. 259, January 29, 1993).

- IGF-1 is widely involved in human carcinogenesis. A significant association between IGF-1 and an increased risk of lung, colon, prostate, and pre-menopausal breast cancer has recently been reported. (International Journal of Cancer, 2000 Aug. 87:4).

- Several studies have shown powerful associations between IGF-1 and the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer, and pre-menopausal breast cancer. (Smith, George Davey, et al. Cancer and insulin-like growth factor-I. British Medical Journal, Vol. 321, October 7, 2000, pp. 847-48).

- IGF-1 can completely take the place of growth hormone in breast tissue….and trigger cell growth without an outside cue. Estrogen can amplify the cell-proliferating effects seen with IGF-1, both in the breast and prostate. Excess of IGF-1 …. puts one at risk for breast cancer.’ (Kleinberg, David L., et al, Growth Hormone and Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I in the Transition from Normal Mammary Development to Preneoplastic Mammary Lesions, Endocr. Rev., Feb 2009; 30: 51 – 74).

To minimize the risks of cancer, simply give up dairy milk and switch to a non-dairy milk such as home-made coconut milk.

Russell Eaton is the author of “The Foolproof Diet” (www.the-foolproof-diet.com). A free ebook is available showing how to make non-dairy coconut milk and yogurt quickly and easily. The 4 step check for skin cancer detection

January 9th, 2010

Moles can turn into cancerous melanomas so it’s important you check your moles regularly and talk to your doctor if there is any sign of danger.

Follow this 4 step, A-B-C-D, guide when checking your moles and if any of the points are true, be sure to take appropriate action.

free online casino gambling play

Asymmetry: If one half of the mole does not match the other half. A mole or birthmark that has skin growth which increases in size should be examined by a doctor.

Border: If the edge of the mole is ragged, notched or blurred. Moles with skin cancer may have uneven borders.

Color: If the mole is a mix of brown, black and tan rather than an even color you should ensure it is looked at by a doctor. A mole that appears red or blue should also be cause for concern.

Diameter: If the mole is larger than a pencil eraser (6 mm). An important sign of melanoma is a change in size.

Check your body thoroughly at least every three months and if you have quite a few moles be sure to keep an eye on any changes. If any of your moles stand out from the others or if a mole starts bleeding for no apparent reason you should always consult your doctor.

The good news is that there is a lot you can do to protect yourself from skin cancer, or to catch it early enough so that it can be treated effectively, so make sure you check yourself thoroughly and often.

This is Ivan Fienney from Greenleaf, ID. This is my story on how I went from being a elementary school teacher working over 60 hours a week to now making $7,700 to $8,500 a month online. This is very solid and real. And this is without ever needing to pick up the phone and try to sell someone anything. I was able to double my previous job”’s income, working less than 10 hours a week on my computer at home. And I am on track to hit $100,000 a year.

Natural Cancer Therapies: Supplements and Drug Cautions

“XXX May Offer Health Benefits, But Evidence Still Limited” was the headline about a natural cancer therapy. This was in sharp contrast to an overblown television report about a new cancer drug which was reported to be the hope of all cancer sufferers for the decade.

When we hear about research results from the media we need to become aware of the types of language that is being used to describe the findings of the studies. In medical reports findings tend to be cautious unless it has been written by one of the pharmaceutical company ghost writers.

When the media reports on a positive finding about a natural product doctors are wheeled out and asked to provide a “balanced” report, discussing why it isn’t as great as it seems and everything that could go wrong by way of possible negative side effects. The doctors are very obliging.

However when the report is about a new drug that patients have trialled, the drug company provides the television reporter with a number of very happy patients who did well on the drug. In these cases I do not remember ever seeing a cautious doctor being paraded in front of the camera to provide warnings, nor to decode the company statistics which if done would show that the results are nowhere near as good as the drug company marketing would suggest. Cautions are only provided for a product that drug companies cannot make a huge amount of money from.

Not all natural products are worth taking, of course. There are a lot of natural plants and derivatives of plants which are poisonous, and a common sense approach is always needed.

However any plant which has been in our diet for generations and any mineral which is scientifically shown to be essential to the health of humans can be safely taken by most of us without concern. Where research has shown that an item like tea (black, white, or green) is likely to be beneficial to health then there is no need to be concerned. If you like it, drink it. Whether it is has been proven to medical standards to work for a particular inflammatory condition is irrelevant. One positive research finding can be sufficient to reasonably add it to your diet.

The same can be said about selenium and cancer. Selenium is an essential mineral and has been shown in a range of studies to be beneficial both in the prevention and treatment of a range of cancers, despite many cancer societies saying the evidence is not yet in to say so. As each person requires selenium anyway then taking the small amounts in a supplement is likely to do more good than harm.

I get very irritated about those professionals who gravely inform the public about the supposed dangers of supplements and the problems they can cause. I understand that there has only been one possible death in the last years that might have been attributable to an overdose of a supplement. Please note these qualifications as it wasn’t actually proven.

However properly prescribed drugs are the third highest cause of deaths in the US. That is, drugs prescribed in hospitals kill more people than all accidents and respiratory diseases. Only cardiovascular diseases and cancer cause more deaths than legal drugs prescribed in hospital. Note the “in hospital” component of the statement. Deaths from properly prescribed drugs taken outside hospital are additional, as are medical mistakes and patient mistakes.

There is a strong media bias both in medical journals and in the mainstream media against natural health products. It is time for us all to become educated to interpret what is being said.

Any drug which is not identical with what the body needs (i.e. as a food or natural supplement) is treated by the body as a toxin, a poison. This is not sensationalism. It is just a fact. When a toxin is given the immune system swings into action to remove it from the body.

There are occasions when it is useful to have drugs, such as painkillers after a car crash, or antibiotics for bacterial meningitis and in cases such as these, plus many lesser conditions, we may well decide to take the drugs on offer. However it is important to know that even these drugs are toxins and require to be removed from the body thus putting pressure on the immune system. Some drugs have the potential to really improve a person’s quality of life. All drugs have the potential for nasty side effects. It is drugs that we have to be very careful of, not natural products.

Natural Cancer Therapies vs Conventional Treatments

December 27th, 2009

There is a much quoted study on the natural cancer therapies websites. The quote says that 75% of cancer doctors would not take chemotherapy for cancer due to the toxicity of the drugs. The quote is very much out of context but is indicative of some of the issues. However the paper says very much more. It was a paper that asked doctors who care for patients with cancer if they would take part in different types of treatment trials if they themselves had cancer. This was a study from over 20 years ago but I would have to ask if things have changed at all in the time since it was done.

Four different scenarios (different presentations of lung cancer) were given to the doctors. They were asked if they had that type of cancer would they take part in a study comparing different treatments. All the trials they evaluated were chosen to show the different types of study that were taking place at the time that the study was done. They were asked what treatment they thought was best for each condition, then if they would participate in a particular trial and if not, why not.

It was interesting that the chemo trials were not well liked, with only 11-31% potentially agreeing to participate. Of those who didn’t between 60% and 75% stated they wouldn’t because chemotherapy was too toxic and between 58% and 76% stated that chemotherapy was an ineffective treatment. Remember these were treatments that these doctors or their colleagues were asking patients to undertake at that time.

Subsequent research findings have improved little. Morgan’s paper of 2004 showed that chemotherapy only contributed about 1.5% to the five-year survival rate for lung cancer and just over 2% to the overall five-year survival rates of all cancers. Given that chemotherapy works well in a couple of cancers (testis, Hodgkins disease) slightly in a few cancers, the very low average of 2% reflects the fact that chemotherapy doesn’t work in others (prostate, uterus, bladder, kidney, soft tissue sarcoma, melanoma).

So why are people being offered chemotherapy when there is so little effect?

I put this down to a belief as strong as religious belief is to a bigot. I say this because of conversations with a whole range of people from those in the street, to friends, to doctors I work with and to people I know with cancer. There is a belief that a severe disease like cancer needs a strong drug to deal with it. Without it they will die. Time and again on television we see people who have survived cancer put down their survival to the magical drugs they received under the wonderful care of the doctors and nurses at their chosen hospital.

“It’s chemo or death,” said a friend. She was going for chemo and suffered horrendously for over six months before turning down more treatment.

Sadly doctors also have this belief, at least in front of their patients. However the scientific paper that showed that chemotherapy trials would be turned down on the basis of toxicity and that they did not work suggested that their private views might be different.

So why is chemotherapy offered so frequently when it has little effect?

One response is that chemotherapy is not given to improve longevity in most cases but to improve the quality of life for the time they have left. If this was true it would be worth it. However I know of NO patient whose quality of life was improved as a result of chemotherapy. Every person has talked only of the horrors and the problems they have been left with.

So why is this happening?

I put it down to the matter that doctors do what they believe their colleagues require of them according to the fads, fashions, financial and social incentives of each decade. Doctors have been struck off their local medical councils for refusing to give the chemotherapy that the power brokers all agree is the necessary required treatment. Change is slow and is mostly driven from outside. We need to ask doctors, ethics committees and politicians the difficult questions. If the Morgan and Mackillop papers are accurate, then why are they prescribing chemotherapy when it has such little effect?

Frankly I would turn to natural cancer therapies given what I have read in my research explorations. They might not be proven by randomized controlled trials to the satisfaction of the oncologists, but they don’t do the damage of the current fad, fashion and incentives. And if the large number of recoveries are not due to the medical treatment it must be because the body’s immune system kicked in and improved its functioning, so it makes sense to work with nature and do anything that we can to improve the immune system.

Natural Cancer Therapies: Comparing Like With Like

December 24th, 2009

The media often deals harshly with a person who has cancer who turns down medical treatment, turns to natural cancer therapies and subsequently dies. The success of a natural cancer treatment is measured on whether the person who is ill survives a natural lifespan. But this is not the case for medical treatments. Medical treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy often use much “softer” evidence of success.

When comparing results it is important to make sure that like is compared with like.

Success in radiotherapy and chemotherapy is often measured, not in terms of improved longevity but in terms of the regression of the tumor. There is an assumption that if the tumor reduces in size that the patient must do better in the longer term. This idea seems to be common sense, but it has not been proven to be the case.

It is clear that those who respond to chemotherapy do better than those who do not. But there is no research which shows that a reduction of tumor size is linked to improved longevity when compared to those who are not treated. And radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments cannot be said to be effective if this case is not made.

Would the patient (and his family) feel that regression of the tumor was a “successful outcome” if he still died in the same time frame as if he was not treated, and if he suffered terribly from side effects of the treatments during the process?

A second measurement is the number of people who survive to five years. A doctor who gets more patients to the five year mark than his colleagues might feel a personal triumph but the family whose mother dies at five years and three days will feel just as devastated as if the mother dies three days prior to the five years. In the first case the patient is designated as having a successful outcome and in the second as a less successful one. But for the family it is the same.

A third definition the medical profession use is the length of apparent tumor-free time until metastases appear. They call this disease free time, but if the disease commonly returns it seems disingenuous to pretend that the treatment made the patient disease-free. However the point as issue here is whether tumor-free time is a success if the patient then goes on to die in the same time frame as they would if they had not been treated?

Many medical professionals get very anxious and often very annoyed if you ask for evidence that the recommended treatment works. They may well spray around wonderful sounding percentages to “prove” that their recommendations will give a better chance.

However there have also been many a time when the doctor (reluctantly) hands over the research only to find that the patient or a member of their family dissects the research to find that the wonderful percentage improvements relate not to longevity but to tumor regression or to increased tumor-free time.

So if your doctor is making percentage claims of success for a particular treatment ask what this means in terms of additional years of survival. If he will not tell you or cannot tell you, then the probability is that the research does not show such an increase. If he does claim years of increased longevity then ask him for a copy of the research that says this. After all he is asking you to undertake treatment with potentially horrendous side effects (not to mention the cost to the family).

If the increased longevity is measured in only a few months then only you will know if the six to twelve months of treatments and side effects is worth two to four months of extra life, remembering of course that you might be one of the group of people who do not get that extra time.

If longevity with a high quality of life is your aim then think carefully as to how much the offered medical treatment may increase your longevity alongside the high cost of treatment side effects. It is a perfectly valid choice to decide against medical treatment for the time being and to choose to work with natural cancer therapies instead.

Remember that while natural cancer therapies have not been proven to work to the satisfaction of the medical profession neither have their own treatments (except in a few cases) been shown to be effective in treating cancer. This means that those tens of thousands of cases who recover may well have recovered anyway. Self healing is a natural process, built into our bodies.

Therefore any natural cancer therapies which support an improved immune system and a happier, more satisfying quality of life must be worthy of consideration.
