One of the biggest ways to kill a diet, or to pack on unneeded pounds without realizing it, is by snacking too much, and on the wrong things.
Anyone can look at a plate and realized if they eat all THAT, they’ll be stuffing themselves. A bit of discipline can stop you there.
But our habit regarding snacking can kill us.
Here are 4 tips for healthier snacking
-
Don’t snack when you’re not hungry – research shows that snacking to ‘fill up’ or prevent greater hunger just doesn’t work. You would still eat the same number of calories the next meal regardless. And, like smoking, far too often we fall into a habit of snacking. Break this NOW. Snack only when you’re hungry and to hold you over and prevent a blood sugar drop so you don’t end up eating anything in sight.
-
Eat high protein snacks – yep. More advice to avoid carbs. Protein will help you feel full longer. You eat a carb based snack, and (again) statistically you’ll eat the same number of calories at your next meal regardless.
-
Nuts! – researchers found that those who ate peanuts, peanut butter, almonds, chestnuts or dark chocolate were significantly less hungry than those who snacked on rice cakes or pickles.
-
Treat yourself! – Ice Cream, ½ cup, give you a jolt of choline, which is shown to lower blood levels of homocysteine. Huh? That means a lower chance of cancer, heart attack, stroke and dementia. carefully, and you can find them with as low as 3g saturated fat. Best? This treat triggers the pleasure centers, making you feel good about it!
