It’s funny, I’m living in Kumamoto and one of my friends asked me if I lost weight since I’ve been in Japan. She was surprised when I told her no. The stereotype of Americans is that they’re all fat, but I’m 5’4″ and my weight fluctuates between 110-118 lbs. She didn’t believe me when I told her I haven’t changed.

The reasons behind Japanese skin whitening is similar to the Victorian era’s ideas on being fair: they believe that if one has darker skin, that the person does manual labor in the sun. It sounds racist to us as Americans (having so many wonderful cultures that we all know about & live with), but when you live in a culture where EVERYONE looks similar to you, it isn’t an issue for anyone because there is no one different from the other to get offended. But as an outsider, it can be offensive.

When I lived there, my best friend was half Japanese, half white. She was the one who introduced me to an eating disorder that I suffered from and continued until I moved back to the States. She would challenge me to not eat dinner with her or come hang out with her instead of eating lunch at school. Now, being here for so long now, I have overcome it, but I still struggle with the body-image thing, but I guess that’s just the pressure of being a girl in most cultures.

@bigalisme I agree!!

I used skin bleaching cream to lighten scars. That’s about it. It worked for me. But I wouldn’t dare use it on my entire body haha.

July 5, 2010 6:18 pm

Are you half Japanese yourself? You look mixed :)
I am half Italian and half black and I’ve used natural skin lightening creams all my life. (I’m 19) I am medium-light skin tone. I adore tan skin, not pale white. Here in Italy tan skin is praised in certain regions. So I can see how people can unconsciously fall into a certain mind of beauty just by being raised into a bias idea being taught to them through the media and people. In a sense, it’s brainwash to society. That’s how racism begins.

@SleepyDeity True!
Noticed that most racists are also stupid and lazy? lol
Some folks just like to blame their problems on as many people as possible other than themselves. To me, when someone arbitrarily blames one person’s bad behaviour on his or her race, it’s just as silly and illogical as saying someone is prone to robbery because he or she is left handed.
Racism is typically a symptom of a flaw in character or an unfortunate cultural attribute.

@sailorqueen2013 The worst part is how she hides behind another (darker) girl’s picture. This girl has clearly been damaged in her life but she doesn’t have the right to pick on other people or tarnish the image of someone else because of it.

Truth be told, she needs help.

July 5, 2010 7:54 pm

@bigalisme I agree with you. But I think some people who are racist are really just severely damaged. A bad experience with more than one person of a certain race can really dig deep with some people.

My point is that bad experience shouldn’t have to effect complete strangers. Which is what this person is doing. She clearly has issues with her mixed heritage and she wants to take it out on other people. That’s not right under any circumstance.

July 5, 2010 8:52 pm

@SleepyDeity Wow didn’t know that. Thanx for the info. It’s terrible that people think they are ugly because they are dark but for someone to biracial saying that, that’s crazy.

July 5, 2010 9:44 pm

@SleepyDeity Oh. Well thanks. But that’s a sentiment shared by some woman. It’s weird, but being biracial.. we don’t really think of it that much. It’s not really the “advantage” people think it is. When people go for values rather than race/appearance, there will be more people being raised in multi ethnic homes and communities who will stop looking at race as inferring social status, and just being a physical characteristic.
Maybe due to my upbringing, I’ll NEVER fully understand most racism.

@bigalisme LibertineDeInsane is a poser. She created this fake user name to troll Youtube pretending to be someone. Those pictures on her profile aren’t of her. She’s actually an extremely fat bi-racial, woman at least ten? years older than the girl in those pictures. BTW they are of LibertineDeSade. Please ignore and/or report this troll who has been harassing people under this name for months. She’s going especially hard since her main profile LibraDiaries was exposed.

what are you doing in japan

July 5, 2010 11:09 pm

@LibertineDeInsane it has nothing to do with your skin color is where you go and the people you surround yourself with because I am dark and I have had no problem progressing in life. Light or white does not equal beautiful and the only for us as a race to improve ourselves is to realize this fact

@LibertineDeInsane Why lie about who you are so you can find some guy. Ditch ghetto culture/men. Go out in the world and get an education and you WILL find a man who loves you for you. Make friends with people of different cultures and you’ll learn to love your colour.
Don’t feed the societal sickness by changing yourself. Part of the reason biracial girls have more money is because white people tend to have more money/education for historical reasons. It has NOTHING to do with their colour.
